The Architecture of Ice Cream

We like architecture. We like ice cream. And now, we like Coolhaus.

So what brings these three things together? Dwell magazine. They just sponsored a nifty little contest that we just HAD to participate in. Coolhaus is, in the words of Dwell, "the new architect-owned ice cream truck that's been driving around LA from sweet tooth to sweet tooth delivering ice cream sandwiches named after modern architects and architecture. They offer flavors like Frank Behry, Mies Vanilla Rohe, Richard Meyer Lemon Ginger, and most recently Neutrapolitan. Today we're launching a contest to ask you, pun-savvy designophiles, to invent Coolhaus's next ice cream sandwich flavor!"

And invent we did. Here's what we came up with:

Ray Frappé (Andrew)
chocolate chip espresso ice cream between two orange mocha cookies.
“Orange mocha frappuccino!”

Macchiato and Silvetti (Kayce)
ice cream: coffee, with a thin layer of sweet cream on top
cookie: slivered almond cookie

Cookies Ando Cream (Kayce)
ice cream: cookies and cream!
cookie: chocolate wafer cookie

Chocolate Chipperfield (Kayce)
ice cream: chocolate with chocolate shavings
cookie: shortbread

The Souto de s’Moura (Matt)
chocolate ice cream with marshmallow ribbons between two thick slabs of graham cracker cookies

Lord Norman Bananas Foster (Matt)
rum-laced banana ice cream between cinnamon-dusted snickerdoodles

LeCorbu'Sorbet (Scott)
Lemon Sorbet between red and blue colored sugar cookies

I.M. Pie (Scott)
Green tea ice cream between graham cracker cookies

Falippin Stark (Scott)
coconut sherbet in a tiny pancake taco

Antoine Prerock (Scott)
Chocolate ice cream with marshmallows served on a praline cookie (rocky road prior to mixing)

soy ice cream between rice cakes (for those lactose intolerant types)

Phillip Johns'blend (Scott)
bananas blended in white chocolate frozen yogurt between pecan sandies

Maya Limon (Stephanie)
a single scoop of lemon sherbet placed atop a shortbread cookie slab

Pistachio Urquiolo (Stephanie)
pistachio ice cream sandwiched between lace cookies

Brad Cherrypitt (Stephanie)
all the ingredients for making cherry ice cream served on a beignet
(along with a "how-to" manual)

We think our entries are pretty darn clever. But most importantly, they all sound DELISH. Which is why the inventors of each flavor have been commissioned to concoct their sandwiches and serve them to the office periodically throughout the summer. I, for one, am looking forward to some Macchiato & Silvetti on a hot July afternoon. We'll be posting the creations here as they are made and enjoyed.

The winner of the contest will be announced this Friday, and we just found out that TWO of our submissions were short-listed! Stay tuned to find out if archimania takes the cake - er, ice cream.
